Sam Wilbur joins legend Bruce Bickford as Maine's only steeplechasers to compete at a world-class level. Wilbur placed 7th in 1995 and 6th in 1997 at the US National Championships in the 3000m steeplechase.

Wilbur has been ranked in the top ten Americans twice by Track & Field News in the steeplechase. He made five US National teams, competing in the UK, Denmark, Brazil, Turkey and Japan. He was a five-time NCAA All American at Dartmouth in X-C, the indoor 3000, and the steeplechase. His best finish was third at the NCAA Championships in the steeple in 1995. He set one Dartmouth school record, running 4:02.26 for the Mile indoors in 1995. His 7:56.29 3000 at BU in February 1995 was the fastest 3000 in the NCAA for that year. He won seven Heptagonal (Ivy League) Championships at Dartmouth in X-C, 3000, 5000, DMR, and the steeple. Wilbur still holds the New England collegiate meet record in the 10,000 from his 29:14.74 in Dedham in 1995 where he lapped the field.
From 1998 to 2002 Wilbur competed for the US Army, and qualified for the 2000 Olympic Trials.
On the roads Wilbur ran 23:37 at the Rojacks 5 mile, 29:41 at the Wichita, KS 10k, 34:20 at Falmouth 7.1, 49:21 for 10 miles, 1:02:43 at the New Haven 20k, and 1:06:48 to win the Hampton Half-Marathon. At Mattanawcook Academy he was a seven-time State Champion, and set a State Record in the 1000 yards of 2:17.1. He has high school bests of 1:58.9 800, 3:59.5 1500, 4:21.4 Mile, and 9:27.0 3200.
