The Great State of Maine has produced more world-class distance runners than would be expected of a state with a population of only 1.3 million. Is it the traditional New England "Yankee work ethic"? Is it an innate toughness bred by brutal Maine winters? Is it a diet made up mostly of lobster, blueberries, potatoes and soft-serve ice cream? For the answer, you'll have to ask one of the athletes listed on this site.
I created this site after reading the website for the Maine Running Hall of Fame. I enjoyed reading the stories of the great Maine runners of the past, and it got me thinking about where they all ranked in relation to each other, and to the recent track stars from Maine. By scouring the web for collegiate school records, Track and Field News yearly US lists, and with invaluable input from many of the runners listed on this site, I have been able to construct a reasonably accurate all-time list of the fastest distance runners who attended high school in Maine. I hope you enjoy this information, and please email any corrections or additions you have to [email protected].
